A quick help guide to formatting your resume.
When applying for jobs, resumes are the key to securing an interview. We see hundreds of resumes on a daily basis and standing out from the crowd is one of the key issues facing job seekers in today’s market.
Your resume is a tool which is used to gain the attention of the reader and create interest in you as a potential employee. A visually appealing resume is easier to read and will entice an employer to read further and learn more about you.
How do you stand out? The first step in getting noticed is ensuring you have a well formatted resume. So don’t just be another resume in the pile, follow these simple tips and you could be well on your way to landing that dream job!
Formatting Tips:
- First impressions count! Make sure your resume is on a visually attractive and user friendly template.
- Use clear and appropriate headings for each section. Keep relevant and related information grouped together under headings.
- Ensure that you choose a professional font that is easy to read such as Calibri or Arial with sufficient font size. We recommend keeping your font around 11 in size.
- Consider using a little flair with a border and text boxes to highlight key attributes.
- Dot points are also a great way to ensure your information is being noticed.
- Lastly but not least, white space is an important part of your resume.
Often less is more, so rather than putting as much on your resume as possible, just consider if it is pertinent to the role. White space between key headings will benefit you more than unimportant information.
Once you have decided on the format you want to use, just ensure you keep it consistent. One thing that will stand out on a resume is lack of consistency, so always keep your font style, sizing and space between headings the same throughout the whole document.
