Contract … with a chance to go permanent

open_doorCandidates who are actively job seeking can often be looking for a permanent position which is stable and secure. Let’s face it, who wants to go through the whole job search process every couple of months?

With an increasing trend in today’s job market towards employers hiring for contract roles as opposed to permanent ones, we take a look at some ways to make a great impression and potentially keep your ‘foot in the door’ for longer.

There are some great advantages about accepting a contract position. Firstly, you have the opportunity to see whether you like working with that organisation and how you will fit into their culture. Secondly, it is a great way to get ‘your foot in the door’, and if a permanent position does become available, you already have experience within that organisation.

It is highly recommended that a contract role is treated like a permanent job as the contract may be extended or a similar permanent position may be offered. Some suggestions on how to be indispensable, and keep your foot in the door for longer, are:

  • Learn – try to learn as much as possible about the organisation, its employees, its services and everything in between. The more you know, the more useful you are in the organisation and the easier you will fit in.
  • Know what you’re there for – with contracting, you are usually there for a particular project or reason. Stay focused on your project and maximise your efforts to be remembered for the great job that you did.
  • Be proactive – remain focused on your duties, but if you have any extra capacity ask if you can assist in other areas. This is a great opportunity to learn different aspects of the organisation and may interact with other employees.
  • Report in – constant communication with your employer/supervisor will keep you known in the workplace and can ensure that you are aligned with your employer’s objectives.
  • Make yourself known – Be a team player and take the time to get to know everyone. Make a great impression with your colleagues and managers by engaging with them at company functions or simply in the lunch room.
  • Be grateful – although you may only be in a contract position, be grateful for the opportunity you have. Have a positive and strong work ethic and enforce that you want to value add, not just that you are “just on a contract.”
  • Do something different – show that you can be resourceful by being creative or innovative. If and where possible, introduce an idea or strategy that will benefit the organisation.
